Philosophy for the Rest of Us

Stephen Bloch-Schulman’s Philosophy for the Rest of Us is a primer for students new to philosophy to introduce them to two different directions for engaging with philosophy. In one direction, it is a study of philosophy, to understand what philosophy is and how to do it well. In the other direction, it is to think with philosophy, to recognize philosophy as a tool through which we can think about anything more carefully and deeply.

Philosophy for the Rest of Us has five main chapters, each focused on a single philosophic activity:

  • Analyzing Philosophic Questions: Stepping back to ask what we ask and why
  • Exploring Philosophic Methods: Articulating different ways we activate interesting questions to move towards better answers and better questions
  • Reading Philosophy: Learning from insights others have articulated and from the habits that we gain by reading
  • Talking Philosophy: Speaking and listening to learn
  • Philosophic Writing: Writing both to share insights and to continue to clarify ideas

Anticipated publication date: Summer 2024
